Foreigner fans who had high hopes of seeing the last original member, guitarist Mick Jones, in concert at the Calvin Theatre last night may have been disappointed as he was nowhere to be found.

But it seemed most people in the crowd either didn't care or didn't notice as they danced and sang along with the band over the hour and 45 minute set.

To be fair, however, most of the founding members of the group have been gone for more than 20 years. And second, the replacement musicians are all ace players to the point where it's doubtful even real Foreigner geeks could discern the difference between them and the original six guys as far as their sound.

Jones, 70, is the only band member to appear on all Foreigner records, but missed a year of touring between 2011-12 after having heart surgery. His absence last night went without comment from the band.

The group opened with the crotch-rock anthem "Double Vision," with lead vocalist Kelly Hansen doing a formidable imitation of original singer Lou Gramm. The rock stomper "Head Games" followed, much to the crowd's delight.

The group provided an arena rock flair in a much more intimate venue. "Cold as Ice," which featured some nice harmonies, brought more screams from the near-capacity crowd. Hansen wasted no time engaging the audience, going out into the crowd, and walking across the seat tops, shaking hands with fans.

The band took a comparatively mellow turn with their 1981 hit, "Waiting for a Girl Like You," with Hansen again doing a dead-on Gramm take.

It was then back to raw-meat rock of "Dirty White Boys," followed by the atmospheric introduction to a toned down "Say You Will."
The latter song once again proved this iteration of the band could definitely sing.

After band introductions, they launched into the band's first hit, "Feels Like the First Time."

The remainder of the show was a trotting out of the band's other hits, such as "Urgent," and "Juke Box Hero." The only glitch of the evening was a combination keyboard display and drum solo that served only as iceberg-lettuce type filler.

The encore included "I Want to Know What Love Is," which featured choral backing vocals by Northampton High School's The Northamptones, and the night-ending "Hot Blooded."

Jamie Kent did his usual excellent set of catchy acoustic pop to open the show.

We  saw Foreigner  for the first time in Estero Florida on May 22, 2014 on their soundtrack of summer tour with Styx  and Don Felder (We were there to see Styx).  After seeing  Foreigner for the 1st time we were blown away.  Best concert we have ever seen !!!  We have since been to the Louisville Ky, Elkhorn WI, Mount Pleasant MI, Sarasota FL, Melbourne FL (meet and greet and thank you Bruce and Tom for the nice pictures with my wife) shows and have tickets to the upcoming Milwaukee WI (general admission with ice pass), Elkhart IN ( row B seats 5 and 7) and Lima OH show ( row F seat 108 and 110).  That would be 9 times in 10 months.  Just wondering if this is excessive or just normal for Foreigner Fans ???  Brad  & Kim.

« Last post by SU_5757 on February 07, 2015, 08:08:04 pm » has been showing WFAGLY consistently as the 4th song, following  Cold As Ice.  This was true of the New Zealand dates and also reported on Feb 4.  I'd doubt that it would change before Feb13.

Please forgive me if I'm not minding my own business, but I think you can figure on the band playing that song. Every time I've seen them in the past few years they have played it. You might want to include the date of the show you will be attending, though.

Thank you for the review! I really enjoyed reading it. Cool to hear the crowd was into it.

OK, so is that the "full concert review," cuz it's been 48 hours and if you wanted to say more it would be OK. ;)
