Oh yes. Both shows were playback performances. TV producers hardly take the risk of real live performances theese days. Only very few shows around the world specialize in live performances and then they always emphasis on the fact that it is really live. Sad but true.

I LOVED all the videos!!! But a little disappointed that they weren't "live" per say. "In Pieces" I am pretty sure was the studio version matched up to this video, and same with "Cold As Ice".

Why do they do it like that? Can't they show the actual performance with them actually singing? Forgive me for the question- I just don't understand the logic behind it, that's all. That is the beauty of live performances- see if they can match the perfected studio version, and hear them in that live element, you know?

Either way... very very cool videos, and I really liked the "mashup" with all the songs!!! Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you.  Love the videos.  And my personal favorite the BPs. They matched the venue quite well.  And Mick has the WPs on.

Hi Nick,
Germans like to be perfect which means: don't take the risk that a band is not as good live as they are on a CD ... I think we all prefer the live acts.
What they could do is a playback of the instrumental version and let them sing live. Not as much effort to do the soundcheck as if everything is live.
Perfect promotion anyway.

I once heard Frank Elstner say (he was the host for both shows: „Wetten Dass..? and “Verstehen Sie Spazz?”) that it would be really difficult to let artists perform live on stage since the acoustics would often be rather bad in those big halls. Besides, people would prefer hearing the songs the way they sound on the record.
We all know that the band is able to deliver the goods on stage but if you look at those other guests who perform in these shows we can consider us all very lucky that they don’t play live! Oh! The horror!!  :o
Never for the life of me would I watch such a show if it is not absolutely necessary since one show is as on a low level as the other. But people love those lowbrow things. (So what does this reveal about us Germans?!?!  ::)) Anyways, it is always a good promotion to have an appearance there so go for it! And we are going to watch it. Aaaahhh the things you do for your favourite band!!!  :-*

The only big tv show over here, which allows or even wants the artists to play live, is "Wetten, dass".
I've seen KISS performing live on there and they sucked terribly!! HAHA
I would have chosen for lip synching in their case. *gg*  ;D  Brian May and Roger Taylor did also a great live set once. Afterwards people were complaining about the loudness. *duh* I'll never get those people... ::)

Well, I'm very proud of Foreigner and their tv performances in Germany, even if they were not live! Great promotion and an excellent chance to keep the name Foreigner circulating!

Tina :)

Yes, I agree that it is too bad they were not able to perform LIVE.  They can hit those songs out of the ballpark live!  They are wonderful live!  Well, it really doesn't matter in the end as long as we get to see the guys performing and promoting Foreigner around the world.  Love the BP's and white sleevless shirt on Kelly and Mick with the WP's!  Great close-ups on the In Pieces video! 8)

A message from Kelly Hansen:

Hello all,

I just had to take a few minutes to address all the speculation surrounding
lip-synching. First of all, I'm fascinated by all the interest and banter on
the subject, really entertaining. The fact of the matter is we (Foreigner)
would always prefer to play live, and I have openly spoken about my distaste
for performers who lip-synch live, I think it's a total wank. And we will be
playing the Itunes festival, which will be recorded live and released on
Itunes almost immediately, blemishes and all. But there are many, many
different kinds of T.V., cable shows etc. who only are able to work in a lip
synch format. To try to explain why would take more time than I have, but
generally, it has to do with T.V. budgets and the extremely limited time
allowed, particularly during a live broadcast, for setup and sound checking,
etc. there are also situations where there is partial lip-synch, where the
music is recorded but the singing is live.  We have done all of these, from
time to time, except live in concert. That is and always will be live.
There is no effort to deceive anyone or misrepresent anything.  Lip-synching
for T.V. has been happening since the dawn of television, and will continue
to do so. Those of you who know us well, understand that we can play live,
and we always, ALWAYS do so on T.V. when it's possible. It is monstrously
more complicated to do so, but we prefer it. I see too many lazy artists out
there that choose the easy road of lip-synching when they don't need
to. Shame on you! BTW, yes, my synch on ZDF-Fernsehgarten was kinda lame,
but fun. But I think my synch on Verstehen Sie Spaß was pretty damn good! So
sue me! Let's try not to make this a back & forth discussion, I got shows to
sing live! I love you guys and thanks for the support!

Hey Kelly notice the guys are more critical than the girls  ;)
and I love the fact that you can be your own critic!
Any exposure is good exposure whether it is live or not!
Thanks for checking in with us, what an awesome treat!

Kelly, So nice of you to take the time out of your very busy schedule to write to us fans.  I really appreciate it.  To me,  it didn't matter whether you were lip-synching or not, I enjoyed your performance in Germany.  You guys "rock"!  The main thing is to get your name out there promoting your new CD.
I saw you live at Casino Rama in Orillia, Ontario way back in February and I was so "adrenalized" (sorry for the Def Leppard reference)  after your wonderful performance, I didn't want to go!     I know you are playing in Niagara Falls, Ont. in October, any chance of you guys playing in the Ottawa area?   We love you guys!  Take care,

KC

Hi Kelly- With your busy schedule, it's nice to hear from you on the board. Lip-synching or live, it doesn't matter. You guys rock!!!!  :) ;) In my own personal opinion you guys can't do anything wrong. Loved your performance and keep up the good work. Have fun in Europe and enjoy your fans there. See you back in the States in September ;D

Hi Kelly and thanks for responding. It's great to hear from any band member because after awhile these discussions are just speculation. I think this discussion was never a criticism of you or the band, but a criticism of these type of shows. Everyone on this forum has seen Foreigner many times and knows very well what you guys are capable of in a live performance. In fact, it seem like lip-syncing is more difficult than just singing live. So, Kelly and the rest of the guys, sometimes our discussions are much to do about nothing.

;)Kelly!  It's so nice to hear from you!   It really doesn't matter that lip-syncing or not, the most important thing is you enjoyed it and we did too,   We all understand your situation.
